Cheese

Ah cheese – let me count the ways I love you

At last count at least 30 ways to be precise, because we stock 30 cheese sourced from all over the UK and Europe.

We are especially proud to sell the 2 Cotehill Cheeses, produced just up the road in Osgodby. Michael and Mary Davenport have been farming and milking cows for the past 30 years, but they only started making cheese in 2005. Just one year later in 2006 and their Cotehill Blue was already winning international accolades. You mustn't leave Lincolnshire without trying some  'Yellowbelly'. No, you don't have to eat one of the locals, it's the nickname of Cotehill Yellow – see if you can spot it in our cheese counter!

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Cheese is one of the most concentrated sources of calcium, protein and vitamins A, B12 and D.
  • Eat a piece of cheese after a sugary snack and you'll help protect yourself against tooth decay by restoring mineral to tooth enamel
  • A little bit of mould on a hard or semi firm cheese is fine. Cut it off and the cheese is still safe to eat, but if you see any mould on a soft cheese throw it away. This never happens in my house!
  • You should serve your cheese at room temperature. This rarely gets chance to happen in my house.  But if you have more willpower than me, cheeses will develop their optimum flavour and texture when taken out of the fridge 30 mins to 2 hours before serving.
  • There are thought to be 700 UK cheeses. Whereas the French and Italian only have about 400 each
  • Cheese does not give you nightmares. In fact it contains tryptophan which actually reduces stress and can therefore help you to get to sleep.
  • The world's most expensive cheese is made by Christer and Ulla Johansson in Sweden from moose milk

And whilst we don't sell moose cheese we do sell cow, sheep and goat's cheese. We have everything from traditional cheddars to the world famous Lincolnshire Poacher

We're always looking for new cheeses to sell, in fact this seems to be a full-time occupation for my daughter and her friends. If we don't stock what you're looking for please ask. Our staff are also happy to let you try any of our cheeses.
